I’m always looking for a good snack that my kids will love, minus all the junk! You can definitely find fruit leathers in stores, but most of them have so much added sugar, and the healthier ones can be a little costly.

Dehydrated pumpkin fruit leather is so straightforward that even your kids can make it, with some assistance of course. Anything homemade is always a plus in my book!

Health Benefits of Pumpkin

You may ask, what are the benefits of eating pumpkin? Well, glad you asked! Pumpkins have a tremendous amount of health benefits, including being the best known source for beta carotene, which is a powerful antioxidant that gives orange colored fruits and vegetables their color, and that the body converts into vitamin A.

The fiber, vitamin C and potassium in pumpkins all support heart health, and also help reduce high blood pressure and obesity, since pumpkins are also low in calories.

So pumpkins aren’t just tasty, they’re also full of healthy goodness for your body!

How to Make Pumpkin Fruit Leather

Making pumpkin fruit leather is child’s play! You only need 4 ingredients, and I’m not kidding!

The first ingredient you will need is pumpkin puree. Now you can either purchase cans of organic pumpkin puree if you’re pressed for time, or you can roast a pie pumpkin or butternut squash, then puree it. However you’d like to obtain your pumpkin puree is totally up to you.

The second ingredient is apple sauce. Again, you may get a jar at your local health food store or make it out of fresh apples.

The third ingredient is honey. Adding a little sweetener to the recipe is nice, since pumpkins aren’t very sweet.

The fourth ingredient is cinnamon, which adds a burst of warm fall season flavor to the fruit leather.

Once you have all of these ingredients ready to go, add them all to your blender (I used this high powered Vitamix blender). Then blend everything until the mixture is very smooth.

Add the puree to your tray, using the dehydrator sheet, and smooth it out with a spatula. Then place the tray in your dehydrator at 135° for 8 hours.

After 8 hours you may remove your tray from the dehydrator and cut your pumpkin fruit leather, using a pizza slicer or  kitchen shears. You may want to roll them in parchment paper to avoid sticky fingers, and tie them with baking twine.

Storing Dehydrated Pumpkin Fruit Leather

To store your dehydrated pumpkin fruit leather, use an airtight container, such as mason jars. These delicious treats will last a few weeks, if you are able to keep them for that long.

Have fun making this wonderful healthy treat with your family – enjoy during the fall and holiday seasons.
